Dental Crowns and Dental Bridges

Dental Crowns and Dental Bridges in Sacramento, CA

If due to an accident or disease, you lose a tooth. Dental crowns and dental bridges are non-surgical procedures to fix a damaged tooth or a gap where a tooth used to be.

A crown is like a cap that goes on top of a single tooth. It is usually made from porcelain, ceramic, or metal, depending on the affected area, budget, and preference. The crown covers the whole tooth so that you do not see any difference.  It restores the strength, shape, and appearance of the lost tooth. We match the color to your other teeth so it blends in and doesn’t stand out.

A bridge fills the space where you’re missing one or more teeth. It’s a fixed piece that anchors to the teeth on either side of the gap using crowns. The false tooth sits in the middle. Once the procedure is complete, you can resume your normal routine, such as chewing and talking.  It also keeps your remaining teeth from drifting out of position, which happens when a gap remains open for too long. Both crowns and bridges are standard restorative work we do at Samuel Dental Care.

The Procedure for Dental Crowns in Sacramento, CA

Getting a crown takes two visits to our office on K Street. At the first appointment, your dentist in Sacramento, CA, examines the tooth to assess the extent of damage and determine whether a crown is the right move. If it is, we prep the tooth. That means cleaning out any decay, filing down the damaged area, and reshaping what’s left so the crown can fit over it. Then we take impressions of the prepped tooth and the surrounding teeth. Those measurements are sent to a lab, where the crown is built to match the color, size, and shape of your natural tooth. You’ll wear a temporary crown while the permanent one is being made.

We pull off the temporary, check the fit and bite of the new one, and cement it in place. If something feels off, we adjust it right then. You shouldn’t leave with a crown that doesn’t feel right.

After the procedure, the tooth may feel a little discomfort for a few days till the crown sets. It is like a slight discomfort. After that, you maintain it exactly like you do for other teeth. Follow our routine, brush it, floss it, and get it cleaned regularly. If you maintain the crown well, it will last longer. We’ve seen them hold up for ten years and longer without any issues.

Getting a bridge also takes two visits. At the first one, we check your mouth and decide if a bridge is the right treatment for your missing tooth. If it is, we prep the teeth on either side of the gap. Those are the anchor teeth. We file them down enough to fit crowns over them, since those crowns are what hold the bridge in place. Then we take impressions so the lab can build a bridge that fits your mouth exactly. You might get a temporary bridge to wear while the real one is being made. We’ll tell you how to take care of it in the meantime.

On the second visit, the temporary comes off, and the permanent bridge goes on. We cement it to the anchor teeth and check the fit, the alignment, and how your bite feels. If anything needs adjusting, we do it before you leave. The bridge fills the gap and looks like it belongs there.

Some sensitivity for a day or two after the bridge goes on is normal. It goes away on its own. After that, treat the bridge like you’d treat your own teeth. Brush around it carefully, floss under the false tooth with a threader, and keep coming in for your regular checkups at our Sacramento office. A bridge needs the same care your natural teeth do. That’s how you keep the bridge and the anchor teeth in good shape for years to come.
